CERTIFICATE OF ACCEPTABILITY
WHAT IS A CERTIFICATE OF ACCEPTABILITY?
A Certificate of Acceptability (COA) is a statutory requirement for businesses involved in the handling of food intended for human consumption. It confirms that the premises meets the prescribed hygiene and safety standards.
The certificate is issued in terms of Regulation R638 of 2018 under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972 and is required for lawful operation.

COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
Businesses must comply with prescribed hygiene and food safety standards, including:
- Training of the person in charge of the premises in accordance with Regulation R638

- Suitable equipment for hygienic food handling
- Temperature control for storage and preparation of food

- Identification and prevention of potential health hazards
IMPORTANT NOTICE
A Certificate of Acceptability is issued to a specific premises and is non-transferable. Any change in ownership, location, or food handling activities requires re-application and inspection.
Certificates remain subject to ongoing compliance and routine inspections by Environmental Health Practitioners.
Failure to comply with prescribed standards may result in suspension or withdrawal of the certificate.
